Wendell Van Twelves, 70, of Springville, died November 20, 1991, at the Stanford Heart Center, Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford, California, from complications following open heart surgery. He was born June 7, 1921, in Spanish Fork, to Walter Orson and Sarah Butler Twelves. He married LaRhea Nielson, December 19, 1944, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He is survived by his wife of Springville; one daughter an one son, Valerie Gillen, Los Altos, California; Wendell Van Twelves Jr, San Diego; four grandchildren; one sister and two brothers, Beverly Twelves and Joseph Twelves, both Spanish Fork, and Leland Twelves, Provo. He was preceded in death by a son, David, one sister and one brother. Burial was November 25, 1991. He was an F6F Hellcat pilot, and had a very distinguished career. He was inducted into the Utah Aviation Hall of Fame's roster of distinguished aerial pioneers and heroes. He received the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with seven Gold Stars, a Purple Heart, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
