In the early years of their marriage, she would accompany her husband, a ship's captain, on his voyages down the coast to South America. When they got to the doldrums, the wind would die. Sometimes, 8 to 10 ships would drift together. They would go from ship to ship visiting while they waited. When the wind came back up, they would say their goodbyes, and sail off in different directions.
