3rd President of the University of Rochester 1900-1935. He persuaded his neighbour, George Eastman, to make very generous donations to the University, enabling it to establish its famous medical and music schools. When Rhees became President, the University endowments totalled around $750,000; by the time he handed the mantle on, that figure had risen to over $50m. The Rush Rhees Library, which contains thousands of historic U.S. letters and documents, is named after him. At the time of his death, he was living on prestigious East Avenue (#1063). He died aged 78 years of coronary thrombosis and was interred in the University of Rochester's own plot at Mount Hope on January 7th 1939.
