Edward Kirby HERTFORD was a "celebrity" dentist in Los Angeles, CA who was friends with (and later 'family' to) the comedian W.C. Fields. Edward married 12 November 1973 Eloise MONTIJO, the younger sister of W.C. Fields' mistress, Carlotta Monti[jo]. He was a private pilot and auto racing enthusiast. The couple had no children.

Edward came to California with his parents about 1913 at the age of three. After their divorce in 1915-1916, he appears with his mother in the 1920 census for Los Angeles, CA and in his father's household in the 1930, 1935 and 1940 censuses. He graduated from dentistry school at the University of Southern California in 1934 and was licensed the same year by the Dental Board of California.

FROM J. Golosk: "Dr. Edward K. Hertford, a young California dentist, was enamored when [Hollywood comedian W.C. Fields] first came to him for dental care. The star was so impressed by the treatment he received that he told all his friends about young Edward. A best friend relationship soon blossomed. The two guys were often seen playing golf, dining, drinking, and socializing together. It is possible that the short movie produced and acted by this Hollywood star called "The Dentist" was influenced by Dr. Hertford... Dr. Edward K. Hertford became friends with the Great One in the early 30s. After [Fields'] death in 1946, Edward would occasionally bring out a half empty bottle of gin and vermouth (he saved from his friendship days) and dug into his files for [W.C. Fields'] X-rays and reminisce about the times they spent together."

Edward K. HERTFORD narrowly avoided being in a plane crash that killed three auto-racing friends in 1951: "The plane's fourth passenger was originally supposed to be Dr. Ed Hertford, a Burbank dentist and auto racing enthusiast. But Hertford, who was also a former airline pilot, was concerned about the reports of bad weather along the flight route, so he decided not to go." - FROM http://www.cemeteryguide.com/gotw-HellingsBarker.html

He lived in Burbank, CA in the mid-1960s, later residing in Laguna, CA and Corona Del Mar, CA, where he died aged 89.
