Proper housing, screens and extensive sanitation projects including extensive city water systems and mosquito-abatement programs were enacted to minimize the spread of deadly mosquito diseases—particularly malaria and yellow fever. Even with all this effort, about 5,600 workers died of disease and accidents during the U.S. construction phase of the Panama Canal. He died of Yellow Fever at the age of 29.
