John Bernard Cruz Obituary:
"Age Claims John B Cruz At His Home Near Waverly Early Sunday Morning
Funeral And Burial Tuesday"-

“Waverly, Kentucky, Jan. 20, 1927 – John Bernard Cruz, one of the oldest men in Union County, died at his home near here early Sunday morning, January 16. Had he lived one and three fourths of a year longer he would have celebrated his centennial anniversary.

“Mr. Cruz was born in this county, near Robinsonville, on October 21, 1828 and spent all of his long life in the county of his birth. He married Miss Arimenta Wathen who died in 1896. Six children survive, two sons and four daughters, all of this county. They are: Peter and Frank W. Cruz, Mrs. John Payne, Mrs. Mary L. Hite, Mrs. W. L. Mills, and Mrs. Carrie Barker.

“Funeral services were held from St. Peter’s Church at 9:00 o’clock Tuesday morning when a Solemn Requiem High Mass was sung by Father P.J. McNiel, of Louisville, formerly and for fourteen years pastor of St. Peter’s Church of which Mr. Cruz was a consistent member. Father McNiel was assisted by Father Norman, pastor of St. Peter’s and Father J.T. Pieters, pastor of St. Agnes, Uniontown. Father Norman preached the funeral sermon. Burial was in the family plot at St. Vincent. Twelve grandsons were active and honorary pallbearers.

“Mr. Cruz was a very successful and prosperous farmer and a citizen of the highest type. He was one of the old time Christian gentleman of the kind that has made Kentucky famous. He leaves behind a proud record of a long life well spent and a family that bears the fine imprint of good example.

“John Bernard Cruz was a remarkable character- honest, charitable, liberal, progressive and most hospitable. He was one of the original stockholders of the Bank of Waverly and served that institution at different times as director, vice president and president. He took an active interest in the Bank as long as he was physically able to attend the meetings. He was one of the original promoters of the local coal mine. Mr. Cruz was probably the greatest benefactor of St. Peter’s Church. He often said he never lost anything by giving to charity.

‘That he wielded a religious influence over his descendants is evidenced by the fact that four granddaughters became Sisters of Charity of Nazareth: Sister May Oswald Cruz, Sister Charles Albert Cruz, Sister Mary Cleophas Roberts, Sister Aloysius Gonzaga Roberts. A grandson, Brother Isadore Roberts is studying at the Dominican House of Studies, Washington, D.C., and will be ordained in June.

“Mr. Cruz was a native of this county but his father was not. Driven from France by the French Revolution a colony of Monks of the Order of Our Lady of La Trappe, consisting of priests, lay brothers and a number of boys whom they had under their charge, came to America. Two of these boys were Cruz’s. Mr. J.B. Cruz’s father, Peter Cruz and a brother of his, who died on the way and was buried in the ocean, were members of his party. The voyage was so long- many months- provisions gave out and the passengers were in such straits as to be forced to cast lots to determine which among them should be killed to feed the others. This lot fell to Peter Cruz and he was saved by land coming in sight. When landed they were so famished that they had to be fed by spoon.

“After a year at Pigeon Hills, Pennsylvania, the entire colony moved to Kentucky by caravan settling one mile from Holy Cross Church in Nelson County. Father Nerinckx, who was one of the party, bought himself a horse, after one day or two with the slow moving wagons, and arrived in Kentucky a month ahead of the other members of the party. The Hite’s were Peter and Martin, ancestors of a large and well known Union County family. Peter Cruz remained with the monks until hew was twenty-one years of age then married Matilda Abell of Nelson County, and came overland to Union County where he settled and remained until his death.”
