U.S. Congressman. Born in Boydton, Virginia, he graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1811, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Boydton, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1815-19). In 1819, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, was a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth through the Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. Declining re-nomination, he was again a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1845-46). He then retired from political life and managed his estate until his death at age 91 in Scotland Neck, North Carolina.
