Pvt., Co H, 24th North Carolina Infantry, CSA.

Wounded in action during a skirmish with Union troops at Boon's Mill, near Jackson, NC, July 28, 1863 (shot through the jaw).


His brother, 3rd Lt. Alexander Jones Bumpass, served in the same unit and was killed in action at Petersburg, VA in 1865, during the closing days of the war.


Two other brothers, Capt. John K. Bumpass and Orderly Sgt. Robert D. Bumpass Jr. served with Co. F, 5th Texas Partisan Rangers, CSA. Robert drowned while attempting a crossing of the Red River during the war.


Thomas Halliburton Bumpass shares a common stone with his wife Virginia Elmira Lunsford Bumpass (1848-1881) and two of their children: Irene Huntingdon Bumpass (1873-1946) and Florence E. Bumpass (1881-1889).


Their other children were:

Horace Maynard Bumpass (1875-1947);

Walter Cicero Bumpass (1876-1958); and

Virginia T. Bumpass Howard (1879-1973).



Thomas was the son of Robert D. Bumpass and Nancy Marietta Davie Bumpass. His siblings were:

1. Rev. James Carroll Bumpass (1826-1903);

2. Capt. John Kendall Bumpass (1829-1899);

3. Elizabeth C. "Betty" Bumpass Holloway (1832-1862);

4. Margaret Aramynta Bumpass Smith (1832-1903);

5. William Ambrose Bumpass (1834-1887);

6. Robert D. Bumpass, Jr. (1833-1864);

7. Nannie Adams Bumpass Jones (1838-1900);

8. Alexander Jones "Tip" Bumpass (1841-1865); and

9. Horace Lindsay Bumpass (1845-1880).

               T. J. Bumpass, brother of Capt. J. K. Bumpass of Terrell, died at Terrell Friday. Our readers will remember that some time ago he shot himself while his mind was out of balance caused from wounds received during the war. His remains were taken to Farmersville for burial.
