Obituary
Unidentified Newsclipping - 1892
LEACH.--Joseph Leach was born Devember 1, 1803, in Scranton, Pa., and died at his homestead, in Chinchilla, Pa., December 24, 1892. He was the oldest son of Ephraim and Elizabeth Leach (nee Fellows), and a brother of Ebenezer Leach, of North End. When about three years of age he came with his parents to Chinchilla, then known as South Abington, and lived continuously upon a part of the original tract purchased by his father until his death in the family of his daughter, Mrs. William Streeter, who had with him occupied the homestead since the death of his wife, twenty years ago. At twenty-seven years of age he married Eliza Ackerly. His conversion was positive and clear, and the change such that none could ever doubt his communion with God. His faith was strong and abiding. He was largely instrumental in founding the Methodist Church at Chinchilla more than thirty years ago. From the time the class was formed his zeal and love for the church never flagged; his contributions were liberal for every need of the church, and his counsels faithful and wise. Father Leach was a man of sterling integrity and decided Christian character; as the years increased, his piety deepened and his Christian experience grew more sweet. He was a tender, loving father, much devoted to his family and much beloved by them. Eight children survive him - Norman, Freeman, and Joseph W. Leach, Mrs. James Pinkham, Mrs. William Streeter, Mrs. N. Bailey, of Chinchilla, Mrs. E.D. Benson, of Updyke, Ill.; and Miss E. Leach, of North End, Scranton--nearly all active and useful members of the Methodist Episcopal churcxh. On December 1, 1892, when the family and friends, according to custom, gathered to greet him and rejoice that he had been spared to see his eighty-ninth birthday, there was a touch of sadness, for the changes of a year was marked, and he talked more of the glory that was soon to be his. His death was preceded by no sickness; his mind was clear to the last; his death painless and without a struggle. As his loved children gathered he said: "there is no darkness, and I have no fears," and thought it strange that his daughter could not see the shining faces all around him. Such was this glorious sunset, a fit ending for such a life.
