Henry C. Kennedy, eldest son of James Kennedy (1749 – 1836) and the former Miss Ann Stratton (1756 – 1841), was born in 1779 near Popular Forest in Bedford County, Virginia. His father fought with Col. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney at the Battle of Cowpens and was granted 200 acres along the Keowee River in Ninty-six District, South Carolina in 1784. It was here that Henry was raised and educated.

In 1810, Henry married Miss Martha Patsy Cole, daughter of Thomas and Martha [Rice] Cole of Spartanburg, South Carolina. This union had twelve children.
