COLUMBIA — Funeral service for George Washington Arrants, 97, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Shandon U.M.C. with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Mr. Arrants died March 26, 2010. Born November 8, 1912, in Hopkins, he was a son of the late George W. and Alberta Spigner Arrants. He graduated from the U.S.C. College of Engineering in 1934 and taught high school math and science and coached in Dentsville, Ware Shoals and Aiken. In 1940 he moved north to work at the Philadelphia Navy Yard as an electrical engineer. He then worked for Baldwin Lima & Hamilton and Ruge de Forest in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Upon his retirement he was pleased to return home to Columbia.
Mr. Arrants, a member of Shandon U.M.C., was a kind and generous man, hardworking and honorable, loved and respected by all who knew him. His memory will be cherished by his family.
Surviving are his daughters, Elizabeth Whitehead (William), Jean Arrants (Lawrence Kerr); grandchildren, Howard Whitehead, Christopher Cosgrove, Katherine Tinman (Philip), Brenda Foster (Glenn), Jennifer Bennett (Skip), Christian Whitehead (Kelli); six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Vonetta Canady Arrants, Alice Ligon Beckham and Margaret Ligon Campbell; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife of 58 years, Abbie Ligon Arrants; second wife, Louise Smith Arrants; sisters, Annie Starnes, Nell Koon; brothers, Willie, Ben, Reuben and Marvin Arrants.
The family wishes to thank Palmetto Baptist Hospice, Dr. William Logan and Dr. Franklin McGuire.
