Benjamin E. Brown was my great grandfather. He was born in upstate New York, the first son of Orrin and Laura Cady Brown. The family was established in this small town since around 1803, when Orrin's father, Eseck Brown, moved his family from Berkshire County MA.
Orrin and Laura Brown owned much property in the Newport NY area, including a tannery and cheese-making facility.
In 1849 Benjamin, age 22, left for the California Gold Rush. He traveled by ship to Panama, then across the Isthmus and north to San Francisco. He bought farm land in San Joaquin County, but also tried his skill at mining.
He married Lucy Dean in Calaveras County in 1863 and settled on his farm on Eight Mile Road, near Linden in San Joaquin County. They raised a family of six children, five daughters and one son. The farm was mainly wheat and orchards.
Benjamin and Lucy moved into Stockton in the 1890s, then to San Francisco by 1900. They were in San Francisco at the time of the 1906 earthquake. Several days later their son, who worked for the railroads and had a pass to enter the City, rescued them and brought them to the East Bay. Benjamin died later that year in Stockton. He had had a stroke.
