Doctor David Simpson Borland, former pathologist at Williamsburg Community Hospital, died on Aug. 27, 2004.

Dr. Borland, a native of Erie, Pa., was a graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School and had post-graduate training at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the Medical College of Virginia. He was assistant and associate professor of pathology at MCV from 1956 until 1966. He became the pathologist at Saint Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Va., when that hospital opened and came to Williamsburg in 1978 as the first full time pathologist. He retired from that position in 1988. He served a term as the chief of the medical staff and was a member of the hospital's governing board for several years.

Dr. Borland also served on the boards of the Williamsburg/James City County Schools, the United Way, the Colonial Chapter of the American Red Cross, and Williamsburg Landing. He was a member of the Middle Plantation Club and the Saint Andrew's Society.

Dr. Borland was a member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and served as an elder.

He served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and was awarded the British Distinguished Flying Cross after a tour with the Royal Air Force Bomber Command.

Dr. Borland is survived by his wife, Justin Edwards Borland, and his children, Cabell, Curtis and Peter. His eldest son, Duncan, died in 1999.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at Bucktrout Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice House, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
