There is a bit of confusion over Boswell's birthdate. In the 1920 census, his age equals being born in 1843; in the 1900 census, he gives his birthdate as April 1843 On his tombstone, it gives a birthdate of 04/06/1840.

Boswell Blair Lockhart (Sr.) married Margaret McClellan (b. 1852 in Scotland) circa 1870. They had a total of twelve children according to the 1900 census, 9 of whom were living at the time of the census. Of these twelve children, eight are known:

In the 1910 and 1920 censuses, he states that he came to the US in 1870 and was a naturalized citizen.
