William "Bill" A. McClain Aug. 17, 1928 - March 18, 2011 William "Bill" A. McClain, 82, of Sheridan passed away Friday, March 18, 2011 at his residence. He was born in Indianapolis on Aug. 17, 1928. He graduated with a masters degree from Ball State University where he excelled in athletics. In 1950, he was hired to teach Industrial Arts and Drivers' Education at Noblesville High School where he also began as an assistant football coach. In 1954, he became the head coach and had many successful teams. He was selected as the Indianapolis News Football Coach of the Year and was the first recipient of the Ball State Alumni Coach of the Year. That success was matched on his track and field teams who had outstanding records for 12 seasons. His coaching peers named him District Coach of the Year. In 1963, he left Noblesville High School to teach and coach at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. He retired from teaching in 1988. He was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2001. His 80th birthday was named Bill McClain Day by the Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear. In January, he was presented the Ball State University's President's Medal of Distinction, an award given to those who made significant contributions to the advancement of the university, community, state or nation. His second career was as an estate, coin and real estate auctioneer. His wife, Mary, was his business partner. His auctioneer, "For Crying Out Loud," slogan became well known with a proud display on the family farm. His passion was also his miniature horses, mules, donkeys and dogs. He was a member of the Mid-States Mule and Donkey Show Society and his animals participated in many holiday parades and costume categories at State Fairs and donkey shows. People speak of his honesty, commitment, integrity and appreciation of hard work. His laugh and electric personality remained illuminating even in old age. Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Mary McClain; daughter, Stacey (Dan) McClain Henehan; grandchildren, Kiley, Jordan and Noelle Henehan; step-daughters, Jacquelyn (James) Johnston and Gwendolyn (Danny) Ruth; nephews and nieces, Bill and Cathy McClain, Peggy and Stan Schwartz, Kate McClain, Jolynn and Bill Inman, Rollie and Cathy Erb and Greg VanGunten. Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, April 1 at First Christian Church of Noblesville, 16377 Herriman Blvd. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Friday, April 1 at the church with the Rev. Kate McClain officiating. An informal celebration of remembrance with refreshments will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill's name to The Boys and Girls Club of Noblesville, 1448 Conner St., Noblesville, IN 46060.
