DOWAGIAC -- Wallace Leo Fromhart, 89, of Dowagiac passed away Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Dowagiac Nursing Home.

Mr. Fromhart was born May 18, 1913, to Clement and Katherine Fromhart in Newburg, W.Va. He married Donna Belle Parvis of South Bend, Ind., on June 5, 1937. They are survived by their four children, Therese "Terry" Anne (Michael) Moore of Sister Lakes, Wallace L. Fromhart of Camp Hill, Pa., Mary Katherine Brown of Walled Lake, Mich., and James Edgar Fromhart of Bolingbrook, Ill. Additional survivors include 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Fromhart was a graduate of Moundsville (W.Va.) High School and the University of Notre Dame. Following two years as starting quarterback at Notre Dame, 1934-35, he pursued a 23-year football coaching career. Head coaching positions included Mount Carmel High School in Chicago (1937-46), Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa (1947-50), University of Detroit (1951-58, the first three as assistant coach) and semi-pro Sarnia Golden Bears (1961) in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.

Following coaching, Mr. Fromhart worked in parks and recreation and sales in Detroit and Chicago. He and his wife Donna Belle, who died in 1991, retired in Sister Lakes in 1977. He served in World War II as a Lieutenant J.G. in the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Theater, 1944-45.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Dowagiac Elks Lodge No. 889, Sister Lakes Lions Club, and enjoyed gardening and golf.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two sisters, Nell Fromhart and Mary Weigand; and four brothers, Clement, Fred, Vince, Raphael Fromhart.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 28, at noon at the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Sister Lakes, with Father John Grathwohl officiating. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Ind., at 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 27, at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home, Dowagiac. A rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sister Lakes Lions Club.
