Dee was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, the oldest child of Marion Coates and Linice Winn. Dee grew up living in Utah and Nevada. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 26 September 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In 1941, he was living in Ely, Nevada when he went to Salt Lake City to enlist in the Army. He had one year of college at the time.

Dee fought in WWII, along with three of his brothers. After the war, Dee moved to Tooele, Utah, where his parents were living. He met and married Mary Jean Lee and they were married in Tooele on 4 February 1946. They were later divorced.

Dee was living and working in Joliet, Illinois at the time of his death.
