Jacob BENDER born in Woinitschi, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia, on the 1st of October 1892 was the son of Christian BENDER and Elisabetha GROSSHANS. Woinitschi located about 12 miles northeast of Kassel was a sister colony to Kassel. Woinitschi is currently known as Voinycheve, Odes'ka, Ukraine.

On March the 29th 1914, Jacob Bender and Magdalena Esslinger were married by Rev. G Busch in the Evangelical Lutheran Bethlehem Gemeinde near Hilda, Alberta. Albert Becker and Katie Esslinger, Magdalena's sister, were the witnesses.

On June the 3rd 1913, Jacob and his brother's family, Frederick and Justina Bender arrived at Ellis Island, New York aboard the Kronprinzessin Cecilie after an eight-day voyage from Bremen, Germany. After staying with relatives in North Dakota, they continued on to Hilda, Alberta.

Magdalena's family had arrived at New York aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse on October the 29th 1902 from Bremen, and traveled to North Dakota where they farmed northeast of Ashley. In 1913 the Esslinger family purchased a farmstead west of Burstall, Saskatchewan.

After their marriage, Jacob and Magdalena lived on a farmstead just west of the farm post office of Hilda. The couple had twelve children.
