Also served as a Member of the California State Assembly in 1936 and 1948, Democratic Candidate for United States Senator from California in the 1940 and 1954 primary, the 37th Mayor of Los Angeles, California from 1961 to 1973, and was a Candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States of America in 1972. Yorty also served in the United States Army Air Force in World War II (WWII). He died at his home in Studio City. He was 88.
