Funeral services were held April 16, 1961 for Martin Whitford "Whit" Pierce, lifelong resident of Itawamba County. He died at the Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory on April 15 after a two weeks illness of a heart condition. A retired farmer, Mr. Pierce lived on South Clifton Street in Fulton. He had lived in the New Salem community most of his life. The services were held from the New Salem Methodist Church, of which he was a member, with burial in the New Salem Cemetery with Nabors Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors included his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Hudson Pierce; a son, Cecil Pearce of Columbus; and a daughter, Mrs. Rosa Lee Hatcher of Becker; two step-daughters, Mrs. Dexter Anthony and Miss Mary Hudson of Fulton; and three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
