"SALEM, OR - Cecil Ray Monk, 92, of Salem died Monday in a local care center. He was born in Osceola, Neb. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and later received his doctorate from Scripps Institute of Oceanography, University of California, in La Jolla, Calif. He joined Willamette University's Department of Biology in 1927, and served as head of the department from 1942 to his retirement in 1968. He was United States Visiting Professor of Biology at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela from 1948 to 1950, and was named Honorary Professor of Science at that university in 1965.
He was member and past president the Oregon Academy of Science, and member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served one term as president for the Salem Community Concerts Association. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Salem. He enjoyed traveling and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen, in 1969. Survivors include his second wife, Dorothy of Salem; son, Lawrence Monk of Oregon City; daughters, Lois Welch of Missoula, Mont. and Lenore Monk of Lakeport, Calif.; sisters, Ethel Anderson of Lincoln, Neb.; stepdaughters, Janet Heindel of Mt. Lebanon, Pa., and Diane Helin of Sioux Falls, S.D.; stepsons, Dean Sheaffer of Dixon, Ill., and Frederick Sheaffer of Reston, Va.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday in Cone Chapel at Willamette University. Contributions may be made to a scholarship fund in his memory in care of Willamette University, 900 State St., Salem, Ore. 97301 or to Willamette Lutheran Foundation, P.O. Box 169, Salem, Ore. 97308."
