Movie and Stage Actress. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in "The High and the Mighty" (1954). She also won the National Board of Review Award for Billy Wilder’s "Ace in the Hole" (1951). She appeared in several Film Noir dramas. Among other films she appeared in "Johnny Belinda" (1948), "The Harder They Fall" (1956), "1984" (1956) and "First Monday in October" (1981), her last film. She was the widow of actor Paul Douglas and later lived with actor Sam Wanamaker.
