Died in New Hope

Peter M. Eiden, a well known farmer in the northeastern part of the county, died at his home in New Hope, last Friday afternoon, at 5 o'clock. Mr. Eiden had been ailing more or less for the past year, and during the winter of ‘98-'99 was very sick with stomach and bowel trouble. He began to improve along towards spring, and seemed to be gradually gaining in health until only three days before is death, when he was again taken down and failed very rapidly until the end. The immediate cause of death was abscess of the bowels.

Mr. Eiden's birthplace was Reinsfeld, Rhein Province, Germany, and he would have been 45 years old the 26th of this month. His parents and other members of the family came to this country in 1873, locating at once in the town of Sharon where they took up land, and all have been residents of that vicinity ever since. The deceased gentleman's mother died 20 years ago, and his father passed away a year later. Peter was married in '83 to Miss Margaret Schmitt, the daughter of Peter Schmitt, of New Hope, and eight children have been born to them, seven of whom are still living, the oldest being about 15 and the youngest two years. Other near relatives are four brothers and two sisters, John and Adam Eiden, of New Hope, Nicholas and Matt Eiden, Mrs. Peter Eiden and Mrs. John Kolz of Sharon.

The deceased was a hardworking, industrious man and his loss will be not only seriously felt by the family and relatives, but the county loses an honest and true citizen. He leaves his family in good circumstances, having owned one of the best farms in New Hope township, and he also carried insurance of $2,000 in the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, being a member of branch No. 123 of this city.

The funeral took place from St. Martin's church in the town of Sharon, yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. E.P. Lorigan officiating, and the remains were laid at rest in the cemetery belonging to that congregation. The pallbearers were Peter Thierweiler, Sr., Henry Schleisman, John M. Eiden, John Kolz, John Britz and Peter Lolz, all members of the Knights. Others members of Branch 123 that attended from this city were Peter Koehl, Jos. Frank, Jr., Max. and F.A. Krembs, John Krause and Peter Schmitt. In addition to these a number of others were present from this city, including N. Jacobs, Sr., N. Gross, Mr. and Mrs. Alois Gross, Mrs. F.A. Krembs, Mr. and Mrs. N. Bungert, John Martini, J.J. Slutts and Oscar Tack. Wendel Start and daughter, of Knowlton, also attended.

He has been similarly troubled before and was sick all last winter but during the summer and fall seemed to regain his former strength.

The deceased was born in the province of Mitchen, Germany, and would be forty-five years old on January 26. He came to this country with his father's family about 20 years ago and settled in New Hope. He married Miss Margaret SCHMITT in 1883. He leaves her a widow with seven children in comfortable circumstances. He was a member of Branch No. 123, Catholic Knights of Wisconsin of this city and carried an insurance of $2,000. He leaves four brothers and two sisters, John and Adam of New Hope, Nick of Ellis, Matt of Tomahawk, Mrs. Peter EIDEN and Mrs. John KOLTZ of Ellis.

The word MITCHEN used in the name of this family is not a part of the name but is used to distinguish the members of one family from those of another and is taken from the name of the province in the old country where the family originated.
