His mother died a six years later in Sep1888, when he was 18.
When he was 20 yrs old, he appears in the Boston directory, (two years later - 1890), under the name Joseph G. Brookings-living with his step-father, Samuel H Brookings at 60 Warrenton (Joseph was a Trimmer at 651 Washington).
1892: lived with step-father, Samuel, (same occupation and work address) at 52 Pleasant -Boston
1893+1895: listed alone - same occupation/work address as above) living at 297 Tremont.
no more listings for step-father Samuel (assumed he was the Samuel who died 16Apr1893).
1900 Census: Living as Lodger with Ellen Kennedy and others that worked for the railway.
1905: By this time, he was living at 126 Cypress St in Brookline as a lodger with Mrs. Kennedy.
