ERVIN J. CALKINS LAID AN REST HERE LAST SATURDAY

Passed Away at Maple St. Home Following Stroke Ervin J. Calkins, a lifelong resident of this vicinity, passed away at his home on North Maple Street Wednesday afternoon of last week.

Ervin James Calkins was born the son of James and Susan Calkins at Rosebush, Michigan, March 20, 1884 and passed away at Clare, Michigan, April 16, 1947, at the age of sixty-three years and twenty-seven days.

He grew to young manhood there and his parents always lived in the vicinity of Clare, where he made his home except for a time when he worked in Flint. He helped his father clear the land on the Tom Sotham Ranch near Lake George and later became engaged in carpenter work, which he continued until he was injured in a fall from a barn four years ago, and since that time has done lighter work when able.

He was united in marriage to Miss Clara Kube in Clare, November 29, 1911, and this union was blessed by the birth of six children, Florence, Raymond, John, Clair, Doris, and Jimmie.

He suffered a stroke on Monday, April 14, and passed away as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage two days later, despite the fact that his family cared for him tenderly, with the assistance of his daughter, Florence, a registered nurse.

He leaves to mourn their loss, the bereaved wife, Clara; two daughters, Mrs. Weldon Keast, of Rochester, Michigan, and Mrs. Harold Lear, of Saginaw; four sons, Ray and Clair, of Midland, John, of Clare, and Jimmie, at home; his aged mother, Mrs. Susan Calkins, of Clare; one brother, Charlie, of Clare; four grandsons, one granddaughter, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held from the Thurston Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with Rev. E. E. Redman officiating, and the remains were laid at rest among a profusion of floral tributes in Cherry Grove cemetery. Clare Sentinel dated 25 April 1947 (Thank you, Tom!)
