Ensign Elmes was one of eighty-two crew killed when USS Hammann (DD-412) was torpedoed while alongside the damaged USS Yorktown during the Battle of Midway, June 6, 1942. The destroyer was hit amidship and sank in less than four minutes.

Clyde was engaged to Jamie Redwood of Mobile, Alabama.
