FRANCES FOX SANDMEL, 72, a Philadelphia native and lifelong member of Congregation Rodeph Shalom, died recently at her fishing cottage in Maine.

Mrs. Sandmel, a resident of Waterville, apparently died while talking a walk near her summer home at Salmon Lake Camp in Oakland, state police said. Her body was found Thursday.

She was a freelance writer and author of a children's book, All on The Team.

She was also an active volunteer, teaching writing workshops at the Muskie Center in Waterville, a senior citizens home, and working at the Mid-Maine Medical Center in Waterville and the Hospice of Waterville.

She was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College. She was married to the late Samuel Sandmel.

Surviving Mrs. Sandmel are three sons, Rabbi David F., Charles and Benjamin F., and a brother.

Services will be held 11 a.m. today at the Wheeler Funeral Home in Oakland.
