Just over a month later he was promoted to Major in the United States Volunteer Medical Corps, and assigned as Brigade Surgeon for the unit that was officially known as the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, VI Army Corps, but was better known by the name "First New Jersey Brigade". He served in this capacity throughout the war, receiving the brevet of Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on December 2, 1864, for "meritorious and distinguished services during the campaign before Richmond, Va.", and Colonel, US Volunteers on October 12, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". He was mustered out of the Union Army on October 20, 1865, having served over 4 full years in the conflict.
