John H. Oesterling, 88, a retired Summit Township supervisor, died Sunday afternoon at Butler Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Summit Township, to the late Warren L Oesterling and Mary Kehm Oesterling.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific as a Tech 5 medic.
John was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church.
His Summit Township supervisor term was instrumental in the installation of the traffic lights at the intersection of Routes 422, 38 and 68.
He was a barber for 25 years in Butler and was a maintenance supervisor for Holiday Inns in Butler, Pittsburgh and Elyria, Ohio.
He loved hunting with his sons and spending time with his ever growing family and our special friend, Regina Rihn. John was an avid gardener with many apple and peach trees. He was also the president of the residence council at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and was a member of P.E.E.R.
Mr. Oesterling is survived by two daughters; two sons; nine grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister. He was ever so proud to tell everyone he had one granddaughter and two great-grandsons born on his birthday.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Oesterling, one brother, and one sister.
OESTERLING - Friends of John H. Oesterling, who died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, will be received at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor James Lynn of Wesleyan Methodist Church and Pastor Steve Beveridge officiating.
Burial will take place in Butler County Memorial Park.
