George Ellis Baker, age 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on Saturday February 18, 2012 at the home of his son, Curtis Dale Baker.
Ellis was born at home May 25, 1921 in Norman, OK on the NW corner of Main Street and Berry Road. His father James Isaac Franklin (Jim) Baker & mother Ada Pearl (Whitehead) Baker owned and operated the Mistletoe Dairy until it was sold in 1945. Ellis lived in Norman almost all his life.
He was a product of the Norman public school system starting out in the one room New Hope School on the west side of Norman and completing school through the 8th grade before he had to quit to help work on the farm for his dad and deliver milk. In 1941 he married Venitta Fay Warren after she graduated from Norman High School and he worked as an elevator operator in the Skirvin Tower in Oklahoma City. During the latter part of World War II, Ellis worked as a taxi driver on the South Navy Base where he, his wife and first son Jimmy lived in Hill Crest Courts immediately North of the base. Beginning in 1946, Ellis worked as a salesman for Mechanics Coverall Supply Company (later known as Western Uniform & Towel Co) in Oklahoma City until he retired in 1979 following a massive stroke.
Ellis and Venitta were active members of Trinity Baptist Church until they were physically unable to attend services. They loved square dancing, games of forty-two, and family events. Ellis was defined by his cheerful disposition, warm smile, hospitality and compassion. As a man who appreciated order, he found great satisfaction in maintaining his yard, which he kept in immaculate condition until he was physically unable to do so.
Ellis was preceded in death by his father Jim (1969), mother Pearl (1954), sister Eldora Pearl McDermitt (2002), brothers James Welton Baker (1988), Harlin Berkley Baker (1929),Wayne Marion Baker (2007) and grandson Daniel Allan Baker (1994).
Ellis is survived by Venitta, his wife and devoted companion for over 70 years. He is loved and missed by his children Jimmy Clyde Baker and wife Cindy of Norman, Curtis Dale Baker and wife Toni of Slaughterville, Lynda Kay Williams and husband Scott of Choctaw, and Dennis Keith Baker and wife Sally of Pleasanton, CA. He is remembered by 11 grandchildren: Amy Lynn Baker Watt of Norman; Desha Ann Lang and husband Jon of Thornton, CO; Leigh Challis Loder and husband Blaine of Lakewood, CO; Joey Baker Donnelly of Norman; Michael Anthony Scarlett of Yukon and wife Devin; Robert Edward Baker of Norman; Logan Dale Baker and Taylor Carmel Baker of Slaughterville; Anna Duggan Baker and Madalyn Duggan Baker of Pleasanton, CA; and 3 great-grandchildren: Gryphon Patrick Baker Watt, Phoenix Jaymes Baker Watt and Wyatt Gray Loder. Graveside services were held Tuesday morning, February 21 at the Norman I.O.O. F. Cemetery,under the direction of Primrose Funeral Home.
