George Ellis Baker, age 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on Saturday February 18, 2012 at the home of his son, Curtis Dale Baker.

Ellis was born at home May 25, 1921 in Norman, OK on the NW corner of Main Street and Berry Road. His father James Isaac Franklin (Jim) Baker & mother Ada Pearl (Whitehead) Baker owned and operated the Mistletoe Dairy until it was sold in 1945. Ellis lived in Norman almost all his life.
He was a product of the Norman public school system starting out in the one room New Hope School on the west side of Norman and completing school through the 8th grade before he had to quit to help work on the farm for his dad and deliver milk. In 1941 he married Venitta Fay Warren after she graduated from Norman High School and he worked as an elevator operator in the Skirvin Tower in Oklahoma City. During the latter part of World War II, Ellis worked as a taxi driver on the South Navy Base where he, his wife and first son Jimmy lived in Hill Crest Courts immediately North of the base. Beginning in 1946, Ellis worked as a salesman for Mechanics Coverall Supply Company (later known as Western Uniform & Towel Co) in Oklahoma City until he retired in 1979 following a massive stroke.

Ellis and Venitta were active members of Trinity Baptist Church until they were physically unable to attend services. They loved square dancing, games of forty-two, and family events. Ellis was defined by his cheerful disposition, warm smile, hospitality and compassion. As a man who appreciated order, he found great satisfaction in maintaining his yard, which he kept in immaculate condition until he was physically unable to do so.
