Famed American artist, naturalist, and teacher. Abbott Thayer is primarily known for his ethereal angel figures and idealized young women, he also painted landscapes and delicate florals. He founded the Thayer Fund which paid for the establishment of bird sanctuaries throughout the east coast region. First wife was Catherine "Kate" Bloede and second wife was Emeline Buckingham "Emma" Beach.

After his death, his son Gerald Handerson Thayer scattered Thayer's ashes on Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire.

Parents: Dr. William Henry and Ellen (Handerson) Thayer.

DISCOVERER OF PROTECTIVE COLORATION DEAD

Abbott H Thayer Developed Its Principles for Warfare for Use of Allies.
Dublin, N.H., May 29 - Abbott Henderson Thayer, 71, artist and discoverer of the law of protective coloration in the animal kingdom, died here today after an illness that followed an attack of pneumonia.
During the war Mr Thayer went to England, where he helped develop the principles of camouflage for use of the allies and it is believed that exposures endured while there led to his illness.
He was born in Boston. His early work comprised portraiture and landscapes, but later he devoted his studies to ideal figure pictures. He was a member of the American academy of arts and letters and for two years was president of the American artists.
