The Rev. Arthur Elias Brent, 94, of Mount Pleasant died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Oct. 25, 1914, in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Eugene Elias and Lillie Mae Gabriel Brent. On Aug. 1, 1943, he married Doris Lucille Cornick.

The Rev. Brent was an ordained United Methodist minister from 1947 to 1980. He served churches in North Liberty-Tiffin, West Burlington/West Hill, Winfield, Ogden, Centerville, Des Moines/Union Park and New London. He was the supply pastor at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1934 and from Iowa Wesleyan in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in history. He graduated from Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Ill., in 1944 and was ordained in 1947.

He served on the Education Committee of the former South Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was active in the conference camping program and led the acquisition of land for Camp Wesley Woods, Camp Golden Valley and others. He served on the board of United Methodist Conference credit union and conference retirement homes for many years. He built the United Methodist Church in Ogden and also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Ogden Community. He enjoyed camping and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Alice Eberle of Chehalis, Wash., and Anita Hampton of Mount Pleasant; one son, Richard Brent of Ankeny; one sister, Louesa Busch of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and several foster grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for the Rev. Brent will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Herbert G. Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

Memorials have been established for Iowa Wesleyan College and Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church, Board of Camps and Retreats.
