Politician, Hockey Innovator. Known as Lord Stanley of Preston and the 16th Earl of Derby, he was the son of one England's Prime Ministers. Stanley served as Canada's Governor General from June 11, 1888 to May 17, 1893. He also served as a Member of the British House of Commons, Member of Cabinet, Lord Mayor of Liverpool, England, and the Chancellor of the University of Liverpool. In 1893 Stanley became involved in the sport of hockey when he donated a trophy to the amateur hockey club's top ranking team. In 1926 the trophy was named the Stanley Cup in his honor and was used as the National Hockey League's championship prize in professional hockey. Stanley was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1945.
