World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Service Corps, 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. At Montagne Bridge, France, on March 23 and 24, 1918, the Germans gained a position on the South Bank of the canal. Lieutenant Herring's post was surrounded, but he immediately counter attacked and recaptured the position, together with 20 prisoners and six machine-guns. During the night the post was continually attacked, but all attacks were beaten off and owing to the handling of his troops, the enemy advance was held up for 11 hours at a critical period. For gallantry in action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in June 1918 and latter attained the rank of Major.
