Laura was my mother-in-law, and although we rarely saw eye to eye on things, she was a woman that I respected. She was born from a line of strong women and she bore two daughters herself. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994, which she continued to fight and work around until she finally stopped working as a nurse in August of last year. She was devoted to her life's work in nursing, as well as her role in her local ward. She loved needleworking (just like her mom), gardening (just like her daughter), and collecting anything Celtic or "British". She passed away on the first day of the California fires - we had no rage at her passing, because we knew she was finally free of the pain. So the fires raged for us, almost to Laura's backyard. But the hills survived and will be green again. We are all better for having known Laura, and we come out of the experience of her passing with a fresh, if not more careful, outlook on life. Blessed Be!
