Photo courtesy of Marcie Barr, great granddaughter of Catherine Grabeel Munsey. Catherine made the quilt when she was recuperating with a broken hip as a result of a fall from a horse. The blue fabric is hand-stamped with a block. The cotton was grown on Great-grandfather (Jacob) Grabeel's farm.

"In 1846 Catherine Graybeel was 15 years old. A fall from a horse while jumping him over a ditch had resulted in a broken hip. During her long convalescence from this injury some of her time was occupied in making this quilt. She called it "Star in Circle." The cotton from which this material was made was grown on Great Grandfather Grabeel's farm. It was woven on a loom there at the home and was blocked printed by hand. Another venture to help occupy her time was raising silkworms, feeding them, reeling off and winding of the silk threads from the cocoons at the right time. I understand that there was a ready market for this silk at that time. Mary Ellen Olson" Letter provided by Catherine's Great-Granddaughter Marcie Barr
