ALLEN H HENDERSON


Allen Henderson's given name is shown in both variations of "Allan" and "Allen" on historical records.


Parents: Alexander Henderson, b. (Old Deer) Scotland, and Lucina Luddington (b. CT dau. of Titus Luddington) , lived in Manchester, Guysborough, Nova Scotia.; Alexander Henderson was a Loyalist in the Revolutionary War and received a land grant of 150 acres in Nova Scotia. Luddingtons and McCoys were also members of that group who received land grants.


Allen Henderson was the youngest child of Alexander and Lucina (Luddington) Henderson.


Allen Henderson left Guysborough abt 1846, lived first Swan's Island, in the home of the Leverett Banks family. He was a mariner. He soon moved to Deer Isle where he married and had children; and later to North Haven, and finally Rockport, Maine.

1852: He married Sophia Jane Stinson Greenlaw (b. 1836, dau of Benj. and Lydia Greenlaw on Swan's Island, and buried in this cemetery). Marriage took place in Deer Isle.


Allen and Sophia Henderson's children include all of the following in order of birth. First four children were b. Deer Isle. Remaining children, b. North Haven, ME.


Children John F; Lydia F; and Eliza Ann were all born Deer Isle and died there before the age of 3 yrs. They are buried on Deer Isle.

Allan Henderson's occupation throughout his life was seaman, or fisherman. His final occupation was that of 'mail carrier', delivering mail across the Fox Island Thoroughfare to Pulpit Harbor. He died suddenly, Thursday 12 Apr, 1888, as he arrived at the North Haven post office door (see attached news article image).

After his death, widow Sophia J Henderson remarried to William H Ott of Rockport however, she is buried in this plot with Allan and their child Fremont Henderson.
