Allen Nathaniel Rainey was the eleventh child of Richard William Rainey and his wife Rebecca Pendergrass.

On March 10, 1895, Allen N. Rainey married Minnie Lee Anna Fisher (daughter of George W. Fisher and Mary W. Owens). To them were born three daughters - America Jane, Gertrude Buelah, and Anna Lee Rainey. This marriage ended in divorce early in 1902. His daughters were raised by Minnie L. A. and her husband Daniel Kinsey Anglin.

On May 2, 1902, Allen N. Rainey married America Toy (daughter of William L. Toy and Mary Ann Henry). To them were born 3 daughters and 1 son - Claudia Ann, Beatrice A., Flora May and Allen Rilley "Jack" Rainey. It is believed that Toy America Rainey died about 1914 or 1915. It is unknown who raised these children, however they were placed out in foster care in the among various families in the community.
(Beatrice was taken in by the John A Slayden family in Waverly Tennessee, Beatrice married Thomas J Snyder 19 December 1925 in Davidson County)
(Flora May b:3 Dec 1909 was taken in by Hugh L Rogers and his wife Mary)
(Jack was shown as a servant in the home of Jesse and Mary Gwin in the 1920 census)

On Apr 29, 1916, Allen N. Rainey married Harriet Elizabeth "Lizzie" Crowell Fortner (daughter of Squire A. E. Crowell and his wife Mary Elizabeth Pennecost). She had been previously married to Robert Fortner and had two surviving children when entering the marriage with Allen N. Rainey. Allen and Lizzie then had two sons - Richard Allen and James Albert Rainey. This marriage also failed - James Albert Rainey was placed in foster care with neighbors or relatives. In 1920, Richard appears with his parents in the census and James did not. Lather, Richard Albert and James Alfred Rainey were place in an orphanage in Nashville, TN. Lizzie gave her older son (William Fortner) to his father to raise and she tried to raise Louise Fortner while living in the home of her brother Robert Crowell. James Albert Rainey was adopted by John William Wimberly and his wife Ada. Wimberly told a friend, Taylor Boyd and his wife Addie, that his newly adopted son Alfred had a brother at the orphanage, and they responded by taking Richard into their home. They were playmates until they were about 8 and 9 years old and knew they were brothers. Then the Wimberly family moved to Arkansas and Taylor Boyd died suddenly. Addie continued to raise Richard as a single parent. Neither Richard nor James Alfred saw or heard from their mother or father until about 1956. Allen Nathaniel Rainey died in 1934. Richard looked for and found his mother in Ringgold, Georgia in 1956. She had no idea where her son James Alfred Rainey Wimberly was. In 1976, Richard Allen Rainey and James Alfred Rainey Wimberly finally met and reunited after 40 years of separation.
