Clippings......May 30, 1985.........Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Iden will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary June 3. Tom and Gertrude were married June 3, 1925, in the University Methodist Church in Salina. They spent their entire married life in Russell. Mr. Iden retired from the Russell school system in 1968, where he had been a high school teacher, high school principal and Superintendent of Schools for 44 years. Mrs. Iden taught an afternoon kindergarten class in the Russell schools for 19 years and retired in 1965.

Gertrude Camilla Iden, the daughter of Oscar F. and Harriett Florence (King) Olson was born July 21, 1901, near Brookville, KS. Her death occurred Dec. 29, 1996, at Life Care Center, Pueblo, CO at the age of 95 years, 5 months and 8 days.

She lived her early life on the family farm in the Brookville area the oldest of eight children. She attended Sunny Valley Grade School and graduated from Marquette, KS High School with a Normal Training Certificate. She also attended Western State University in Colorado. She taught all grades in a one-room grade school near Smolan, KS for 2 years and then taught first and second grades for two years in Kipp, KS. It was during this time that she met Thomas L. Iden who was the principal of the Smolan Schools. On June 3, 1925, she married Thomas L. Iden at the Kansas Weslyan University Chapel in Salina, KS.

After her marriage, she moved to Russell where he was a teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools for 44 years. After the children were grown, Gertrude returned to the education field and was a beloved kindergarten teacher for an additional 20 years at Bickerdyke and Simpson Schools.

She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1925. She received a special membership in the UMW; was active in Hope Circle of UMW, taught Sunday School classes and sponsored the Youth Fellowship in her early years, sang in the choir and ensembles and performed solos for funerals and special programs in the church. She was an active participant in the Cosmos Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and the Russell Teachers Assoc. Gertrude's greatest joy was being busy and giving of herself. Her labor spanned a lifetime, servicing first her younger siblings, her own children and grandchildren, her elderly parents, her husband during his busy career time and later through his lingering illness. She moved to a retirement home in Pueblo, Colo. in 1991, to be near her son and daughter.

She was preceded in death by parents; husband Tom who died May 15, 1988; three brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include: a son, Dean Iden and his wife Connie, Arvada, Colo.; a daughter, Thelma Rilling and her husband Fred, Pueblo,Colo.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. a brother, Vernon Olson, Mountain View, Calif.; a sister, Mamie Nickels, Kansas City, Mo.;
