She was the first of nine childern born to A.C (Bill) and Anna Lee Hartman. She received her education at the Memphis public schools. On completion she moved to Amarillo, Texas and was employed as a waitress prior to enlisting in the US Army. She served in the United States Army, Womans Army Corp and served in office administration after completing basic training. She married will serving in Virginia and traveled to Army posts in Germany and Colorado prior to her divorce. She relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico to be near the Veterans Hospital due to health issues. While working in Albuquerque she met Harry Joe Nelson,son of Oscar Joseph Nelson and Minnie Hanson, of Brady, Shelby County, Texas. They were married on 4 August 1961 in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, New Mexico. They were active members of the Highlands Baptist church. They lived and worked their entire married life in Albuquerque and continued to live there in retirement. She was unable to care for herself later in life and relocated to a assisted living facility in San Antonio, Texas to be near her son Allan who lived nearby.
