Gary P. Harrington, 72, State Route 13, and Jensen Beach, Fla. died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 in St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse where he had been a patient for the past three days. He was diagnosed in November with amyloidosis, a rare blood disease and multiple myloma.
Born in Syracuse on July 2, 1939, he was a son of Paul H. and Doris White Harrington. Gary was educated in North Syracuse schools and came to the Canastota area in the '50s to work on the George Bargabos Farm. He fell in love with the area and grew in the community. Gary married Shelia Rogers in Canastota on Dec. 10, 1960.
He and his wife Shelia were the owners of Gary's Auto Parts, Inc., established in 1972 and Awesome Fun-N-Skate in Oneida. Gary started and managed the Oneida Block Party for many years and served in many offices and organizations locally and statewide. He attended the Eastern Hill Bible Church, a member and past president of the Auto Recyclers of New York, was on the board of directors for the Oneida Chamber of Commerce and established the Oneida Improvement Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Shelia Rogers Harrington of 51 years, which he said "Wasn't a permanent thing, you know…"; four daughters, Tammy Harrington and partner, Karen Leach of Munnsville, Renee and James Clancy of Corpus Christi, Texas, Jody Armstrong of Chittenango and Jill and Allen Olmsted of Manlius, one son-in-law, David Borowski of Virginia; 11 grandchildren, Graham and Anna Leach-Harrington, Priscilla, Tess and Stephen Clancy, Allison and Aaron Borowski, Tanner, Isaac, Adeline and Estelle Olmsted; one sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Thomas Clancy of Cortland; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Linda Harrington of Syracuse; and several special nieces and nephews.
Gary was a fun loving soul who will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He will be especially missed for his sense of humor and positive outlook on life. Gary's disease destroyed his body, but not his spirit.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, from Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida, with the Pastor Mick Keville, officiating. Interment will be made in Whitelaw Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, 3-7 p.m. Wednesday. Contributions, in his memory, may be made to St. Joseph's Hospital, 301 Prospect Ave., Syracuse, NY 13203 or Amyloidosis Foundation, 7151 N.
