John Johnson Butler III, resident of Jasper, Texas, died at age 84 at Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital on Sunday, February 19, 2012.

John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elsie S. Butler; two children, John P. "Johnny" Butler (Jackie) of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Judith B. "Judy" Langford of Texas City, Texas; two grandsons, Christopher T. "Chris" Langford (Aimee Tavares) of Arlington, Virgina, Garrett J. "Gary" Langford (Amanda) of Mesquite, Texas; two granddaughters, Erika A. Butler of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brittney G. Blakely (David) of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; two great-grandsons, Cody Conder of Weatherford, Texas and Mason R. Langford of Arlington, Virginia; and two great-granddaughters, Jordan & Taylor Blakely of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Nell Butler of Canton, GA.

Preceded in death by his parents, Edna E. (Dickinson) & Calvin A. Butler; five brothers, Herman C. Butler (Omah & Helen), Col. R. P. "Paul" Butler, USAF (Joyce), James T. Butler (Ethel), William "Neil" Butler (Ramah & Elizabeth), and Lester L. Butler (Dorothy Nell); four sisters: Isola E. Wright (Warrington), Thelma E. Chatman (Wilman), Eunice E. Scarborough (R. B.), & Mary Louise Miller (Howard), and numerous nephews and nieces. The 8th of 10 children, John outlived all of his siblings as well as most of his in-laws.

John was born in Durant, Oklahoma on April 10, 1927 and grew up on a family farm in Oak Grove, West Carroll Parish, Louisiana. He graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1944. He married Elsie Lee Smith from Lake Providence in Oak Grove on May 19, 1945. John & Elsie moved to Houston, Texas in 1965 from Shreveport, Louisiana.

John J. Butler never met a stranger, so he was a born salesman. John & Elsie moved from Houston to Jasper in 1976 to establish Butler Supply Co., selling oilfield exploration supplies to seismograph land & offshore "doodlebug" crews throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Gulf of Mexico. As highly successful distributors for Atlas Powder Co., John & Elsie attended several conferences throughout the U.S. as well as Puerto Rico & the Virgin Islands. John served on the Development Board of the 1st State Bank of Jasper from 1995-1997. John was an avid golfer, so after their retirement in 1997, to Rayburn Country Club.

John loved his wife's cooking, loved playing golf, and as anyone who knew him can testify, loved to discuss politics.

Visitation will be held at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. A graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Gary J. Richardson of Rayburn Baptist Church at Evergreen Cemetery at 10:00am on Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
