Old Resident in This Vicinity Hangs Self
Jake Coke, 68 years old and a resident of this vicinity for many years, committed suicide about 8:30 o'clock this morning by hanging himself at his home 3 miles northeast of Dewey. The body was found shortly afterwards by a daughter of Coke's. The man's heart was beating minutes later without Coke regaining consciousness. Coke committed suicide by tying a leather strap around his neck and securing the end of the strap over a projection from the ceiling in one of the rooms of the house. Coke stood on a chair and after fastening the end of the rope, kicked the chair from underneath him. Despondency over ill health is believed to have been the reason for the suicide. The body was removed to the Burt Undertaking establishment at Dewey.

Oldest White Settler Kills Self Saturday
"Jacob Coke, 88 [sic] years old, who came to Indian Territory more than 55 years ago, and said to be the oldest white settler in Washington county, committed suicide early Saturday morning by hanging himself from the rafters of a small outhouse near the home of his daughter, Mrs. Moody [sic - probably is Mrs. Woody], a mile east of Dewey.
Coke has been despondent since spring, it was related in Dewey, Saturday. His crops were destroyed during the high water on Coon Creek last spring and he has been worrying since that time, friends say.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Baptist church in Dewey. Burial will be in the Dewey cemetery."
[His stated age and length of residence in Washington County may be typos by this newspaper. Age does not match what censuses and marriage records state.]
