Barbara Kay Hoy Laws was born in Hot Springs, MT, February 26, 1941 to Melvin W and Fae Hoy. She passed away in her family home in Thompson Falls, MT December 25, 2010.
Barb entered the world, arm in arm, with her twin sister Beverly Hoy Hanson, joining their older brother Bruce Hoy. She started her life in Hot Springs and in 1943 moved to Thompson Falls. She attended Thompson Falls schools from kindergarten through her senior year. Some of her school activities were playing clarinet in the junior high and high school bands, Glee club, pep club, class officer, annual staff, valkyries and cheerleading. The school spirit she displayed during that time carried throughout the next 50 years of following Blue Hawk sports. She was truly one of the biggest boosters the Hawks ever had.
In the spring of 1958 she married the Trout Creek boy she met when she was 12 years old, Harold "Hank" Laws. They made their home in Thompson Falls where they raised their sons, Clint and Chadd.
Barb was primarily a homemaker, although she enjoyed several part time jobs during the years, such as city lifeguard, working at the school lunchroom and at the Sanders County Ledger. Her artistic abilities were evident throughout the area. She painted several large signs for businesses and the Vinson Ranch Rodeo, engraved hundreds of trophies, did calligraphy work for dozens of high school annuals and photos hung on the walls of the high school. There were even logging trucks around town displaying her work on their doors. Her other interests included league bowling, being a member of the Jaycees, an election board member and in the Homemaker's Club.
If ever there was a KoolAid mom, it was Barb. Her sons brought several friends home while growing up to play football and basketball, to enjoy her wonderful cooking and of course her Kool Aid. Barb will always be remembered for her positive attitude, bright smile and her friendly disposition. She always had a smile and a "God bless you" for everyone, even strangers.
Barb is survived by her twin sister Beverly (Jay) Hanson of Thompson Falls, MT, brother Bruce Hoy of AZ; son Clint and grandchildren Shandi and Chase, all of Spokane, WA; and son Chadd (Amy) and grandchildren Jaron, Tanner, and Lindsay, all of Thompson Falls. Barb was preceded in death by her husband, Hank; her father, Melvin Hoy; mother, Fae Livingston; and step father, Wayne Livingston.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Hank and Barb Laws Scholarship fund.
A memorial service will be held at the New Life Fellowship, located on Airport Road, Friday, December 31, 2010 at 1:00pm. Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 pm at the Whitepine Cemetery with a reception following at 5:00 pm at the River's Bend Golf Course.
