Pvt. Baker came to California with his parents at age 2-1/2 years. He attended Roseville Joint Union High School for two years, transferring to a high school in Houghton, NY, where he graduated. Later on he entered the state teachers college at Ashland, OR, where he received his teaching credentials. He enlisted in the US Army on July 7, 1942, at Portland, OR, and was trained at Fort Ord. He served with a field artillery unit in the Aleutian Islands, and it was there he was wounded in action. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1943, and entered the veterans' hospital in Oregon the following day. Almost six months later, he passed away.
