One of the Oldest Oswego County Residents Passes Away Late Thursday Night
SANDY CREEK, March 6, Mrs. Mary J Sargeant. 95, one of the oldest residents of Oswego county, died late Thursday night at her home in this village. She was a member of a pioneer family, which settled here in the early l800's.
She was born here in 1846, daughter of John and Martha Hadley Davis. She attended the local school and Fairfield Seminary, and later taught in this village. She married Edmund H. Sargeant in 1876, who died in 1914. Since that time she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Sheals, in Providence, R.I. and Washington, D.C., and with her stepson, Roscoe Sargeant, this village.
She was very active for one of her years and played the piano. She was a member of the local Methodist church. She attended the first Sandy Creek fair, 85 years ago.
Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Sheals of Clareodon, Va., a son, L. Carl Sargeant of Syracuse; a stepson, Roscoe Sargeant, this village, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoonat 2 o'clock at the home of Roscoe Sargeant, with the Rev. Herbert Harrison officiating.
Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery
