CHETOPA - Orval C. Martin, 84, of Chetopa, died Thursday evening, Feb. 8, 1996, at the Labette County Medical Center after a short illness.

He was born March 24, 1911, in Big Cabin, Okla., to Forrest and Susan Jeanette (Forbis) Martin. He farmed in the Edna and Bartlett area for a number of years. He also did carpenter work, was a bus driver for Ellis School and worked at the Kansas Ordinance Plant.

He married Mary Ellen Bendue June 14, 1936, at Nowata, Okla. She died July 4, 1988. He married Elva Shrum May 28, 1989, at Bartlett. She survives of the home.

Mr. Maatin was a member of the Bartlett United Methodist Church and served on its administrative board. He also was on the board of the Lake Creek Cemetery and was a past president of the Chetopa Senior Citizens. He enjoyed hunting.

Other survivors include five daughters, Virginia Martin of Wichita, Margaret Birchfield of Warm Springs, VA., Shirley Ungles of Perryton, Texas, Patricia Uhrick of Columbus, Ohio, and Cherry Forkner of Arlington, Texas; three step-sons, Donald Shrum of Chetopa, Troy Shrum of Wichita and Leon Shrum of Garnet; a stepdaughter, Carol Ketchum of Parsons; a sister, Gladys Seger of Coffeyville; 17 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Five brothers, two sisters, a son, a grandson and a great-grandson preceded him in death.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bartlett United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elton Garrison officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Creek Cemetery at Bartlett.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bath Funeral Home of Chetopa. The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association or the Bartlett United Methodist Church.
