Stephen Foster Spalding was the son of Levi Spalding and Julia Ann Caldwell. His paternal grandparents were Reuben Spalding and Jerusha Carpenter. Reuben was born on 15 December 1758 in Tyringham, Massachusetts and died on 15 September 1849 in Sharon, Vermont. Jerusha Carpenter was born on 24 June 1768 in Coventry, Connecticut and died on 7 December 1827.

Stephen was a graduate of the University of Vermont. He went to New York for further study. When the Civil War broke out Stephen enlisted on 13 April 1861 in the 7th New York Battery and their went to Washington D.C.

After his term of enlistment expired he returned to Vermont and began recruiting for the Butler Brigade. Attaching himself to the 8th Vermont Regiment, he was chosen 1st. Lieutenant of Company B. He went to New Orleans.

The Captain of the Company, Stephen was assigned, was immediately assigned to detached service leaving Stephen in command.

Early in the Spring of 1863 Stephen was promoted to adjutant of the Regiment, at the same time assuming command of his company when in action. While performing these duties Stephen was killed in the second assault on the strong works at Port Hudson, Louisiana.
