The Rev. Grady Kilpatrick officiated and burial followed in the New Sharon Cemetery in Madison County, Ala.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late George Alexander and Laura Caldonnie Street Bates. He was a farmer, an Army Veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion. He was married to the late Lila P. Bates.
Survivors include six daughters, Alice Smith of Houston, Tex., Jenell Tucker of Tullahoma, Dora Warren of Lynchburg, Gertrude Quick of Taft, Claudia Moran and Evelyn Rozell both of Hazel Green; seven sons, Hollis Bates of Lynchburg, Paul Bates of Valdosta, Ga., Thomas Bates of Flintville, Tn., Jeff Bates of Cullman, Ala., Roy Bates of Ardmore, Ala., David Bates and Jimmie Bates both of Hazel Green, Ala., a sister Ola Pogue of Taft; 34 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
