John Wesley Evans was born April 8, 1856 at Lexington, NC. He was the son of Levi and Elizabeth (Michael) Leonard Evans and was descended from families who for generations were farmers in the Moravian settlement in Forsythe County near Winston-Salem, NC. For many years an uncle, Michael Evans served as pastor of the Sour's Moravian church. When Levi married he moved to a farm near Lexington, Davidson county where he joined the Shilo Methodist church and here, John, one of 14 children, was born and reared. He was baptized and joined the church at an early age. Only one brother, Lee Evans of Lexington, remains of the large family.

John Evans and Phrany Rufizene Clodfelter were married Jan. 4, 1877 at Lexington. Four children were born to this union, three dying at birth. In 1882 he and his wife and small son, Fred, came to Kansas, locating at Eureka, Greenwood Co., arriving July 12th and going immediately to the John Funk ranch north of Russell where he was employed for several years. Later he moved into town and was engaged in the retail meat trade which business he continued until recent years when ill health caused him to give it up.

He is survived by his widow and one son, Fred V. Evans of Russell; two grandchildren, C. Dale Evans of Lawson, CO; Mrs. Mary Waite of Wichita, KS; and a gt. granddaughter, Kathleen Dale Evans, who came into this world just 12 days before he left it. He was still conscious at the time of her birth and able to express his delight when told of it.
